Well, it's here. The sixth installation of Justin Bieber's Music Mondays dropped shortly before 12 a.m. EST on Sunday, Nov. 3. Following "Recovery," the teen idol released "Bad Day," an upbeat acoustic ballad that falls in like moreso with his older material than the previous Music Mondays relaxed R&B ballads.
Beginning with a smooth acoustic guitar riff which then continues throughout the entire song, "Bad Day" also incorporates light computerized drums into its backing track. As opposed to the slower, stringed and piano arragements from other Music Monday singles, "Bad Day" returns to Bieber's Believe days, feeling more like "Boyfriend" and less like "Hold Tight" or "Heartbreaker." Similarly, Bieber's voice is arguably the weakest here. Instead of smoothly falling into deeper notes, Bieber strains to hit high notes in "Bad Day," at times falling into straight whiney territory.
Despite the throwback Bieber sound of the track, lyrically "Bad Day" finds Bieber in familiar territory. Reflecting a break up (with Selena Gomez, but of course), "Bad Day" explores the very moments wherein a relationship turns sour.
As is Music Mondays tradition, Bieber took to his official website to write a short explanation for the song's meaning, as a part of the music journals component. "There are times in relationships where things aren't going well, where you know something isn't right. But when you're in love, you feel like no matter what, you'll make it work...until the day comes where the other person doesn't feel the same way and walks out. That day - the day where everything you were willing to fight for is gone - is what Bad Day is all about. -JB," he explained.
As a whole piece, "Bad Day" is the least successful new single from Bieber this fall. While it's sure to please hardcore Beliebers who may have been turned off by his more mature recent singles, as far as true adult pop, this song marks a bad day for the aging Bieber.
