Costa Rica is already on its way to the next round of the 2014 World Cup thanks to a stellar performance during the opening Group D matches, but the team's opponent today, England, is already heading home thanks to two losses. Though this isn't an important match, England may use it to save face a bit before heading home.
This will also be England's star players Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard final World Cup appearance as the legends are retiring afterwards.
What we can expect from England is a show. Coach Roy Hogson hopes he can mix up the lineup a bit to give the usual suspects some rest while allowing the substitutes to get more international experience - a strategy that is sure to pay off in the long-run.
"I'm looking for them to show their talent," Hodgson said of newcomers Ross Barkley and Jack Wilshere, who are starting today's match. "Both of them are very good passers of the ball, very good at running with the ball. Both, for young players, have good vision for the game. That will improve the more games they play, but they're well advanced for their age. This is a chance for them to show they are good players. They have an opportunity to play from the start, and together in a game with other young players around them. They can show the faith and hope we have that those boys are ready to make their mark. This could be the first moment they give us an inkling that we are on the right track."
We should also expect this to be a great scrimmage for Costa Rica since the team has already progressed into the final 16.
