With NBC's hit show Parenthood airing its season six premiere episode tonight Sept. 25 at 10/9c, fans are anxiously waiting how Amber and Ryan's relationship will unfold this season. Actress Mae Whitman (Amber) chats with TVGuide.com about her on-air relationship and what fans can expect.

As part of a family drama that viewers as well as actors come to love and care about, Whitman reveals that she knows how fans may find it hard to say goodbye.

"That's one really great part about all of this is that we are able to say goodbye," she said. "I think we've built up these people that everyone cares about and you want to know what's going to happen with them and at least feel like there's some sort of wrapping up of your long life with them."

Whitman goes on to say that Amber and Ryan's (Matt Lauria) love (as corny as this sounds) reminds her of a Taylor Swift song.

"I can't believe I'm saying this, but it reminds me of Taylor Swift lyric where she says, 'I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to,' and I've always loved that. It was the first time with Ryan and Amber that you really felt this really raw display of love, but also that they weren't what was best for each other at that point ... It was a really hard and special scene to play."

In recent previews' promoting the season six opening, Amber is seen looking at an ultrasound monitor, however, as revealed by TV Line, her baby-daddy Ryan may not appear in the series until episode 3.

Amber's character has been through a handful: an alcoholic father, dealing with a drinking problem herself, switching school and cities in the first season and even loosing Ryan to the military last season. Whitman loves her characters struggle and real-life situations.

"Something I loved about this character since the beginning was that you get to follow her through this strange of period of adolescence into adulthood. It's a really difficult transition and I feel like I struggled with it in a big way and I feel like it's not something you get to see on TV ... Like in life, it is two steps forward and one step back with her."
