You'd think that after spending so much time on the air, David Letterman would have a say in who replaces him on his legendary Late Show series. Hell, you'd think he'd be able to choose his successor. Well, apparently that doesn't seem to be the case, because it's being reported that he was never really consulted on who would be his replacement. Which has us wondering: Does David Letterman disapprove of Stephen Colbert as his Late Show successor?
Per a new interview with The New York Times, Letterman was asked if he had any involvement in choosing who would be sitting in his spot after he left. To that, he had a pretty telling response:
"No. Not my show. When we sign off, we're out of business with CBS. I always thought Jon Stewart would have been a good choice. And then Stephen. And then I thought, well, maybe this would be a good opportunity to be a black person on, and it would be a good opportunity to put a woman on. Because there are certainly a lot of very funny women that have television shows everywhere. So that would have made sense to me as well."
He then admitted that he wasn't even consulted by CBS, something that irked him a bit in the beginning but as time when on it bothered him less and less. In his head, he had already made the decision to leave and knew that whatever was done after his departure was CBS' choice.
Folks, do YOU think Stephen Colbert was the right choice to replace David Letterman?
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert premieres this coming Sept. 8.
