Guys, if you're looking to build some serious strength in that upper body and core, and get toned and cut at the same time, then bench pressing is undoubtedly key. With that, however, it's important not to just jump on the bench and start lifting weight. First, you need to know how to do it. Getting yourself some tips for pressing that weight on the bench is an important step to building that core and upper body the right way.
In a new piece from Bodybuilding.com, Layne Norton gives us a guide to making sure that when we attack the bench, we're doing it the correct way.
Long known as a way to build up that chest, the bench press is actually an exercise that works the whole upper body: shoulders, back, triceps, and even glutes. And depending on the movement and amount of weight you put on, if done incorrectly the results could be disastrous.
In the below video, Norton explains that he's a "physique architect," and once found himself on the receiving end of an injury when he was bench pressing incorrectly.
"Seven years ago I tore my right pectoral bench pressing incorrectly," he says. "But over time, I learned to incorporate more muscle groups and focus on the movement itself. Not only did it become more safe but my results were better."
Norton then goes on to teach us the correct way to bench press in order to make our press more "effective, safe and fun."
