Some would say that James Harden of the Houston Rockets isn't much of a fan of commitment. After signing a 13-year, $200 million agreement with Adidas, Harden was seen out and about wearing a pair of Nike Air Jordans. Given the fact that the deal doesn't start until Oct. 1, the lack of commitment to Adidas seems a bit sketchy.
Harden recently signed the new $200 million, 13-year agreement with Adidas to endorse the brand and boost their lifestyle merchandise. You'd think that $200 million would get Harden to immediately shelve his Nike Air Jordans for good, but it seems like he's have a hard time letting go. Harden left Nike just last month to sign this deal with Adidas.
According to ESPN, endorsing a competitor is more than enough grounds for termination. Back in 2001, Reebok (now owned by Adidas) ended its deal with Shawn Kemp after he told some reporter that he didn't like the shoes he was wearing, "they weren't made as well" and that his favorite pair of shoes were from Nike.
TMZ reported that Harden was recently coming out of a movie theater with girlfriend, Khloe Kardashian, and although Kardashian was seen rocking Adidas (specifically the Trefoil logo on her sweats and a sweatshirt), Harden was wearing a pair of the black/metallic Air Jordan Vs.
ESPN also shared that when asked whether Harden will have to stop wearing his Air Jordan collection in public when the deal officially begins on Oct. 1, Adidas' Mark King said, "That's part of the deal."
"The difference between football and basketball is that a guy like Aaron Rodgers doesn't have a walk-around shoe," King said. "Harden does, and he will be in our lifestyle stuff."
Clearly, Harden's days for rocking Nike Air Jordans are numbered.
According to Deadspin, Harden was spotted leaving a Manhattan club early on Wednesday, where he drunkenly talked about Adidas vs. Nike, saying, "Nike is... cool. But Adidas... is about to be amazing. SWAG!"
Hopefully, this means Harden will stop messing around with his $200 million deal and actually rep Adidas for the next 13 years without another slip-up.
