After months and months of teasing, CBS will finally premiere the pilot of DC Comics' heroine, Supergirl. In episode 1, viewers are about to get their introduction to Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist), Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh), and Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart).
After escaping from the destruction of Krypton and the Phantom Zone, Kara is rescued by Superman and raised by human parents. Kara has lived with her foster sister, Alex, and now works for CatCo Worldwide Media, which in dire need of making money. With Jimmy Olson (Mehcad Brooks) howing up, Kara then herself instantly attracted to him.
After getting dumped by her date, Kara hears on the news about Alex's plane falling from the sky. Running across the alley, Alex struggles to get up in the air, but she finally shoots up into the air. With her super-strength, Alex barely steers the plane away from the bridge and lands it in the water.
Though she saved her life, Alex and Kara then have a big fight over showing her real superpowers to the rest of the world. Back at the office, Kara notices everyone is watching the news. Cat is now ordering everyone to find her a picture of their heroine. Kara then reveals herself to Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan), showing that she can fly, and asks for his help.
After trying on different outfits and stopping crime, Kara is finally named Supergirl by her boss, Cat. After getting into an argument with her boss over the name, Kara is about to be fired by Cat when Jimmy rushes in. Jimmy saves Kara's job, lying for her, as he shows the first photo of Supergirl to Cat. The celebration ends when Vartox (Owain Yeoman) calls out for Supergirl.
In their first fight, Supergirl and Vartox manage to hit each other, throwing punch after punch. Vortex though happens to be a stronger and better fighter. Unfortunately, the military shows up, letting Vartox escape and hitting Supergirl with kryptonite. Supergirl then wakes up at a secret base and her sister is holding her as a prisoner.
Alex is really working for the military led by Hank Henshaw (David Harewood). Super girl then hears the secret behind her origin. During her time in the Phantom Zone, Kara's ship accidentally freed the prison space that was floating around. Now those free prisoners are bring led by the General to invade Earth, all thanks to Kara.
Alex then asks Hank why she was hired for the job. The only reason the military wants her is because sister is an alien. Though Kara doesn't want to speak to her, Alex asks her sister for forgiveness. The two return back to the base as Vartox launches another strike.
In their rematch, Vartox and Supergirl continue to beat the crap out of each other. Alex orders her sister to fight back, use her powers, and be the hero she's meant to be. Though she was reluctant at first, Supergirl unleashes her heat vision and takes down Vartox. Rather than be taken captive, Vartox kills himself after warning Supergirl that the war isn't over.
James hints at Kara that he knows she's really Supergirl and asks her to meet him on the rooftop. James actually has a gift for her from Clark Kent. Superman always wanted her to a champion for the humans; she just needed to find her way.
The General happens to be Supergirl's aunt and she's ready to kill her niece if she gets in her way.
