Netflix has just released the first trailer for "The Crown," a biopic about Queen Elizabeth II, its most ambitious and expensive series to date -- it cost a whopping $156 million to make the 10-episode series.
According to Vanity Fair, the series will be a 10-episode event focusing on Elizabeth's youth and her ascension to the throne in her 20s. It will also cover her more personal moments, such as her marriage to Prince Philip and the death of her father, King George VI, after his death in 1952.
Claire Foy (who played another royal, Anne Boleyn, in Wolf Hall) will play the queen. Matt Smith (best known as the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who) plays Prince Philip and John Lithgow plays Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
The two men behind The Crown are Peter Morgan (who helmed The Queen and the theater production of The Audience, both of which starred Helen Mirren as the English monarch) and director Stephen Daldry, who's been behind the cameras for dramas like The Reader as well as Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
People Magazine has described the feel of the trailer as "a combination of Downton Abbey and House of Cards," due to its many royal references and the heavy political content, as it's the tale of the woman who is now Britain's longest-reigning monarch, a title she took from her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria last year.
The series is expected to be released some time this year, but Netflix still not announced an official date. Keep your eye on its website release news.
