After almost 30 years of being devoted to the Church of Scientology, actor Tom Cruise may be leaving his religion behind to become a more loving and present parent to daughter Suri Cruise, 9. Suri spends most of her time with mother Katie Holmes, who divorced from Cruise in 2009. According to Esquire, Cruise video chats and talks to Suri on the phone but "it's just not the same." The Mission: Impossible 5 - Rogue Nation star realized that he was missing out on too many of Suri's milestones and decided that in order to be the dedicated parent he wanted to be, he would have to leave behind a religion that he has advocated for such a long time, even becoming a "poster boy" of sorts to the church itself.
Cruise has been denied contact with Suri due to the fact that Cruise's ex-wife, Holmes is considered a Suppressive Person (SP) by the church. Members are forbidden to have any contact with someone labeled as an SP because it is believed that they stunt the members' spiritual growth. It was rumored that Suri herself was to follow her mother on being labeled in such a way and that was allegedly the breaking point for Cruise. He wasn't going to have absolutely zero contact with his daughter. An insider told the Examiner, "If they label Suri as a suppressive person, as they've been known to do with dissenters, that would make it hard for Tom to have a relationship with her."
The most recent phone call with Suri had Cruise particularly upset. An insider told Star Magazine that "she was going on and on about her ballet class and how much she loves it. That's when Tom realized he's never seen her perform ballet and he started to tear up." Hopefully Cruise can move forward in his relationship with his daughter without any backlash from the church or media.
A former highly ranked member of the church, Chris Sheldon believes that Cruise might have some trouble ahead of him when leaving the church due to the fact that the church of Scientology has been known for leaking confidential files containing intimate details of their members when they leave. A Sea Org official even said on the issue of Cruise leaving that "for anyone who leaves the Church of Scientology, there would be massive consequences. There are always consequences for leaving the church."
